This training aims to deepen participants’ understanding of the importance of oral care and to equip them with practical, easy‑to‑apply skills. Oral health is essential for everyone, but it is particularly critical for end‑of‑life patients with disabilities, who often face multiple physical, emotional and social challenges. A comfortable and healthy mouth supports eating, speaking and social interaction, helping to maintain dignity and quality of life even in the final stage of illness. Many simple and feasible measures can be integrated into daily care routines to significantly improve oral comfort and health once carers understand the rationale and develop the habit of applying them.
The course will begin with key concepts: what a healthy mouth looks like; the main causes of common oral diseases (such as dental caries and periodontal disease); and the core principles for maintaining oral health, with a special focus on end‑of‑life patients. Building on this foundation, we will demonstrate practical techniques to adapt oral care for people with physical, cognitive or behavioural limitations, so that good oral hygiene becomes more achievable in real‑life care settings. Participants will be invited to share their experiences, including the barriers they and their clients face when providing or receiving oral care. Through group discussion, we will explore realistic strategies to overcome these difficulties. Finally, the training will introduce dental programmes in Hong Kong that support people with disabilities and special care needs, outlining their eligibility criteria and how social workers can help clients to enrol. By the end of the training, participants will gain both useful knowledge and hands‑on skills to improve the oral health and comfort of the patients and clients they care for.
